Performance Season 2026:

2026 includes a wider range of activities that extend beyond performance-making, focusing on our research on the ecology of the Hong Kong pearl, Inter-Asia mermaid myths, and deep sea mining in the Pacific. We will present our in-progress board game Abyssal Abundance at George Town Festival: a cooperative multiplayer game, where players work together to fight deep sea mining. Players are encouraged to collaborate with other human players and non-human companions to stand against the extractivist machines ready to wreak havoc in the Pacific Ocean and beyond. We are building our mermaid dance performance in residency in Japan, and deepening our reflections on method and making through the form of lecture performances.

Beyond the Shore: The Future of Memories is a speculative science fiction immersive theatre production. An AI bot and hologram performers guide them through a meditative journey, accompanied by live music, multimedia, and movement. Discover the forgotten voices of female oceanic legends and reconnect with their potential histories through this multi-sensorial immersive experience. More details can be found here.

Untold Stories of Salt and Pearl in Hong Kong focuses on local histories of Tai Po and Tuen Mun, specifically historical pearl industry and salt fields from centuries ago. Performance Season 2023-2024:

  • Itoshima International Art Festival, Itoshima, Japan (Oct 2023)
  • Inter-Island Festival, Peng Chau, Hong Kong (Nov 2023)
  • ICAS Conference-Festival, Surabaya, Indonesia (July 2024)

Inspired by the Hong Kong mermaid “Lo Ting” and the pirate queen Cheng Yat Sou (Zheng Yi Sao), the performance series centres mythology, history, and gender. We think through the role of feminised bodies of Lo Ting and Yat Sou in their representations of the oppressed water-dwelling ethnic minority (Tanka people), and figurations of traumatic histories of war and conflict in Southern China. We turn to forgotten legends in the margins of official historical records to recuperate ocean-centric historical narratives as new historiographies of the Southern China coast.
